Colon cancer, which is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States, affects more men than women and occurs more commonly in people with certain inherited conditions (such as familial adenomatous polyposis). The disease occurs when cancerous cells first form in the tissues of the colon. It usually has no early signs. Treatment for colon cancer can include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy -- as well as medications to relieve pain (if pain is present).
