Camptosar Uses

How Does This Medicine Work?

Camptosar belongs to a group of medicines known as topoisomerase I inhibitors. Topoisomerase I is an enzyme that helps relax DNA that has been overwound, which can occur when DNA is duplicating so cells can divide. It does this by breaking the DNA strand to relieve the strain and then rejoining the strand. Camptosar binds to topoisomerase I and prevents the enzyme from repairing the breaks in the DNA, and this causes the cell to die.
