Eloxatin and Breastfeeding

Due to the potentially dangerous risks of breastfeeding while using Eloxatin (oxaliplatin), the manufacturer of the drug recommends that women not use it while nursing. Although no research has been done on using this drug in women who were nursing, Eloxatin can be toxic and could cause serious problems if it does pass through breast milk.

Can Breastfeeding Women Receive Eloxatin?

Eloxatin® (oxaliplatin) is a prescription medication approved for use in combination with other chemotherapy medicines to treat certain types of colon or rectal cancer. At this time, it is unknown whether this drug passes through breast milk. The manufacturer recommends women not receive Eloxatin if they are nursing.

More Information on Eloxatin and Breastfeeding

Eloxatin has not been studied in breastfeeding women. Therefore, it is unknown whether the medication passes through breast milk, or whether it would harm a nursing child. Although this lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to understand that studies of medications are rarely done in women who are nursing, as this would usually expose an infant who will not directly benefit from the medication to possible risks.

It should be noted that, like most chemotherapy medicines, Eloxatin can be quite toxic. An infant exposed to this medicine through breast milk could develop serious problems. Until more research is done on Eloxatin and breastfeeding, potential risks to a nursing child cannot be ruled out. In most cases, these possible risks outweigh the benefits of breastfeeding.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Eloxatin use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
