Now let's discuss what will happen prior to your procedure.

Your doctor will want to discuss your medical history, current medications and any other medical conditions, you may have including allergies. Make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you have allergies to latex, or any medications such as penicillin.

This procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Outpatients go home the day of procedure. For your particular situation, you will be given specific instructions as to where and when to arrive at the medical facility, how to prepare for your procedure and what to expect the day of and the days following your procedure.

Your rectum and lower colon must be completely emptied of stool for the procedure to be performed. If the colon still contains waste, your doctor's view of the lining will be limited and the test results may not be as accurate.

Usually, one or two enemas prior to the procedure is all that is necessary, but in some cases, laxatives or changes in your diet may be recommended by your doctor. Your healthcare provider will give you instructions regarding your specific cleansing routine, it is very important to follow these instructions.

You will be asked not to eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours prior to your procedure. This is for your own safety.
