When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Though the regulations are changing, it is not entirely clear when generic Vectibix will be available. There is still a lot of rulemaking that needs to be sorted out before generic biologics are available. In addition, Vectibix was approved in September 2006, and will likely be protected from generic competition by patents for several more years.

Is Panitumumab a Generic Vectibix?

Panitumumab is the active ingredient in Vectibix, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

However, the generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
